PTIM 340 – Intensive Care Physical Therapy

Course objectives :

Understand the evidence and rationale underpinning physiotherapy rehabilitation in the critically ill Understand the different outcomes used to measure patient progress Critically appraise and synthesize evidence, and use clinical decision making strategies to implement appropriate rehabilitation interventions Demonstrate appropriate, evidence based, direct care to patients with critical illness and injury, including life threatening trauma and multi-system organ failure. Demonstrate appropriate, evidence based, direct care to post-operative patients from cardiothoracic, vascular, gastrointestinal, genitourinary, endocrine, orthopedic, neurosurgical, plastics, head and neck, heart/lung transplant, and abdominal transplant procedures.

Course description :

It provides the student knowledge about how to examine and re-examine a patient regarding the diagnosis and management of life threatening conditions requiring sophisticated organ support and invasive monitoring of.cardiac dysfunction, comas, and obstructive lung disease. It emphasizes on evaluating patient problem, design a plan of care and implement it in the intensive care unit to prevent complications.
