On successful completion of this course the students should be able to: 1. Explain the purpose of Medical terminology. 2. Name the languages from which most medical word parts are derived. 3. Identify and define the elements used to build medical words. 4. Define the terms; root suffix and prefix. 5. Explain what combining forms are and why they are used. 6. Define the rules of word building. 7. Define the process of forming and decoding medical words. 8. Define and provide examples of word roots used in the diagnostic, surgical procedures, pathological related prefixes and suffix. 9. Identify and define some of the prefixes used in medical terminology. 10. Recognise and use roots and suffixes pertaining to cells, tissues and body organs. 11. Explain the difference between over-the-counter and prescription dugs. 12. Describe and understand several terms such as; drugs, dose, dosage form, active ingredient, excipient. 13. Identify components of a complete prescription. 14. Summarise key elements and abbreviations for prescription dispensing. 15. Describe the various terminologies related to drug therapy such as; uses, adverse effects, contra-indications, and drug interactions. 16. Describe the different routes of drug administration. 17. Recognise the major categories of drugs and how they act.
Course objectives :
This course focuses on introducing pharmacy students to medical related terms and to the terms of different subjects related to pharmacy.
