• To cover the basic principles of thermodynamics. • To present a wealth of real-world engineering examples to give students a feel for how thermodynamics is applied in engineering practice. • To develop an intuitive understanding of thermodynamics by emphasizing the physics and physical arguments. • To cover the basic principles of heat transfer. • To present a wealth of real-world engineering applications to give students a feel for engineering practice. • To develop an intuitive understanding of the subject matter by emphasizing the physics and physical arguments.
Course objectives :
Why is \”Thermal engineering\” course important for electrical power engineers? The answer of this question requires knowing the job of both mechanical and electrical engineers. The goal of mechanical power engineering is to produce mechanical energy (work) from raw (natural) source of energy, such as fuel (oil, coal. .etc.), wind energy, solar energy, nuclear energy….etc. At this instant, the role of electrical engineering starts since the generation and transmission of electrical energy of mechanical energy is the important functional part of any power station plant. Moreover, the cooling of electrical devices such as transformers, motors…. etc. is \”heat transfer\” problem and, in turn, a mechanical engineering problem. In accordance, electrical power engineer needs to know some knowledge about mechanical engineering (fluid mechanics & thermal engineering).
