Course objectives :

By the end of this course the students will be able to:

  • Acquire new microbiological and Immunological knowledge essential for their practical career.
  • Understand the mechanism of the normal immune response of the body.
  • Explain how the innate and adaptive immune responses coordinate to fight invading pathogens.
  • Describe the host –pathogen interaction
  • Outline the important cells, tissue and organs involved in the immune system.
  • Explain common immune diseases in terms of the underlying basic principles.
  • Identify Antigen and antibody relations and their impact on human body.
  • Describe the hypersensitivity reaction.
  • Identify of different types of bacteria, and its structure and replication.
  • Describe laboratory tests needed for differentiation and identification of different bacteria.
  • Illustrate principles of sterilization and disinfection
  • Introduce the students to the field of medical microbiology, and engage the students in basic laboratory work.

Course description :

This course is divided into two parts: The first part of lectures covers basic immunology principles  Innate and adaptive immune coordinated response to fight invading pathogen and description of the host –pathogen interaction.  The important cells, tissue and organs involved in the immune system. The common immune diseases in terms of the underlying basic principles.  Antigen and antibody relations and their impact on human body. The hypersensitivity reaction, and the most important immunological disease  The second part of lectures covers the basic principles of medical microbiology: o General concepts of microbiology o Identification of different types of bacteria, bacterial structure and replication. o Description of laboratory tests needed for differentiation and identification of different bacteria. o Beneficial and harmful bacteria in human life. o Principles of sterilization

Total of 200 marks  10 marks Quiz  20 marks Midterm Exam  10 marks assignments and presentations  30 marks final practical exam  30 marks oral exam  100 marks final written exam
