After completing this course, students should be able to: • Define the pharmacokinetic parameters such as half-life, elimination rate constant,clearance and volume of distribution. . Recognize the various pharmacokinetic parameters that can be obtained following single and multiple intravenous and oral drug administration doses. • Determine and analyze the plasma concentration and the amount of the drug in the body at any time after intravenous bolus dose administration. • Explain the steady-state (plateau) levels following continuous intravenous infusion. • Describe the factors that influence the steady-state plasma concentrations following constant continuous intravenous infusion. • Estimate the appropriate loading dose and infusion rate to achieve a therapeutic concentration. • Define the extent of drug accumulation following multiple dosing. • Describe multiple dosage regimens to achieve plasma concentrations within the therapeutic range. • Define the various pharmacokinetic parameters that can be obtained following oral drug administration. • Describe the various mechanisms of renal excretion. • Define the concept of hepatic drug clearance.

Course objectives :

This course is designed to introduce the student to pharmacokinetic terminology and mathematical as well as conceptual aspects of basic pharmacokinetics. Particular emphasis will be placed on obtaining, understanding, and utilizing terms such as, clearance, apparent volume of distribution, elimination rate constant, and elimination half-life. • Prediction of plasma drug concentration based upon pharmacokinetic parameters after single and multiple intravenous and oral doses, as well as after intravenous infusion well be stressed. The course will also cover the distributional aspects of the drugs as well as general handling of drugs by the kidney and liver
