Course objectives :
Reading: By the end of this course students will be able to: – show understanding of the main idea & specific information of texts on subjects related to their fields of interest/common topics. – scan one long or several short texts to locate specific information they need to help them complete a task. – guess the meaning of unknown words from a context. – identify what pronouns refer to in a reading text. – identify the opinions expressed in texts. – identify the main idea, topic sentence, and the supporting details of a paragraph. Writing: By the end of this course students will be able to: – write simple sentences with correct subject/verb agreement. – use the linkers (but – and – also – when) to link between words, sentences or phrases. – identify the main idea of a paragraph and produce a topic sentence expressing it. – develop supporting ideas for a paragraph. – use coordinating conjunctions (and, but, for, so, or, nor and yet) to link two simple sentences meaningfully. Introduce and train students to use these conjunctions. – identify, understand, and correct different types of writing mistakes. – write a coherent paragraph related to the given topic. Speaking: By the end of this course students will be able to: – express themselves in simple English. – use basic sentences and memorised phrases to communicate. – tell a story or describe something in a simple list of points and link groups of words with simple connectors like ‘and’, ‘but’ and ‘because’. – handle very short social exchanges, using every day polite forms of greeting and address. – express an opinion simply giving reasons. – manage to sustain a simple conversation, explaining or giving reasons for their views or choices. Listening: By the end of this course students will be able to: – listen for gist. – listen for details (specific information).
Course description :
The ability to express oneself in a limited way in familiar situations and to deal in a general way with non routine information. In addition to the ability to deal with simple, straightforward information and begin to express oneself in familiar contexts.
