By the end of this course the student should be able to:

• Discuss the principles involved in the immune response.

• Describe the structure, function, and characteristics of immunoglobulins.

• Describe the principles of and perform serological tests.

• Evaluate laboratory test outcomes and relate serology tests to the disease or condition associated with each test; and evaluate the suitability of clinical specimens.

Course objectives

This course covers basic theories of immunology, laboratory diagnosis of infectious diseases, and diseases of the immune system. Students learn to perform basic serological techniques. Also included is the role of the Major Histocompatibility Complex in transplantation and the serological and molecular techniques used to identify the MHC products and molecular techniques for the detection and quantitation of viral components related to disease.
